Porter-Gaud School is an independent, co-educational day school of 980 students in grades 1 – 12 across three divisions. The Lower School division has an opening for a full-time Lower School Reading Specialist for grades one through four.
Porter-Gaud is searching for an energetic teacher to become a full-time member of the Lower School faculty. This teacher will serve as the reading specialist, will teach reading to students in grades two and three, and will serve as a teacher-leader of reading instruction for grades one through four. This person will have a strong background in reading instruction, will be able to teach effectively from the established grade level curriculum and adapt this curriculum to meet the needs of high ability students, and will be able to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.
Broad Responsibilities:
●Teach advanced level reading group in grades two and three.
●Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and where respectful interactions between and among students are valued.
●Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments which address multiple learning styles.
●Lead Lower School Reading/Language Arts Curriculum Committee
●Guide our inquiry into new curricular options; lead our efforts in choosing a new program; facilitate a smooth transition and the implementation of the chosen program.
●Serve as a resource for reading teachers in grades one through four, meeting regularly with each grade level team, guiding instruction and offering resources and support as necessary.
●Maintain database with record of student progress. Use this data to help create and maintain groups for grades two through four.
●Maintain reading curriculum map for grades one through four.
●Participate as an active team member with the other grade level faculty as well as the Lower School community as a whole.
●Work ably with teachers in grades one through twelve in the English department.
Qualifications:
●Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
●Degree in elementary education with strong experience/background in teaching reading, preferably.
●Master's degree is preferable, ideally in reading education/literacy.
●Experience/background in working with gifted/talented students, preferably.
●Related teaching experience, preferably in independent schools.

●Exhibit an ability to work effectively with the grade level teams within the Lower School.

Reporting: The Lower School Reading Specialist reports directly to the Head of Lower School.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
