Porter-Gaud School is an independent, Episcopal, coeducational day school for 900 students in grades 1-12. The School is seeking a Middle School English Teacher who will be responsible for instructing fifth grade school students in Reading in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum prescribed by the Middle School division.
Responsibilities:
-Instruct students in reading in accordance with curriculum requirements and objectives through an effective coordination of technology, textbooks, and other appropriate instructional materials.Although this course will focus primarily on the instruction of reading, teaching writing is the most important focus of Porter-Gaud's English Department.The teacher must be an excellent writer who has mastered grammar and mechanics and also exhibits stylistic sophistication.
-Employ a variety of instructional techniques, including the "Reader's Workshop" approach as well a genre-based approach to reading.
-Utilize assessments that address multiple learning styles.
-Model for students a love of learning in general (and English in particular), a sense of integrity, and a conscientious work ethic.
-Employ a variety of instructional techniques that address various learning styles.
-Develop the analytical abilities of students in both verbal and written expression.
- Evidence enthusiasm for and continued development of content knowledge in subject matter.
- Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and where respectful interactions between and among students are valued.
-Participate as an active team member within the English Department, the Middle School faculty, and the School community, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole.
-Possess an impressive knowledge of the dynamics of various genres of literature as well as a thorough knowledge of the mechanics of traditional grammar.
The successful candidate will have:
-A Bachelor's degree in field or advanced degree from an accredited college or university (certification from an education program and/or an advanced degree in reading or literacy are advantages).
-Preferably five or more years of teaching Middle School English or Language Arts in grades 5-7. The ability to teach grades 5 through 8 at our K - 12 school and rotate periodically from grade to grade is an advantage.
-Fluency in the use of technology in the classroom.
Reporting: The Middle School English teacher will report directly to the Head of the Middle School.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
