Porter-Gaud Upper School English instructors teach grades 9 through 12 at our K - 12 school and rotate periodically from grade to grade, so this candidate should be able to teach any level offered in the Upper School.

Because Upper School English teachers cover all levels, candidates should possess an impressive knowledge of the dynamics of various genres of literature as well as the major trends and historical developments of English and American literature. In other words, a love of literature and writing should permeate their lives and manifest itself in a broad knowledge of contemporary literature.

Teaching writing is the most important focus of Porter-Gaud's English Department, so teachers must be excellent writers who have mastered grammar and mechanics and also exhibit stylistic sophistication. In teaching writing, teachers construct detailed, specific assignments with accompanying rubrics and thoroughly assess student essays with precise and detailed written feedback.

Porter-Gaud teachers possess a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole. Since Porter-Gaud strives to be a student-centered school, teachers' supervision of students extends outside the classroom through various extra- and co-curricular activities.
