Porter-Gaud School is an independent, Episcopal, co-educational day school for 980 students in grades 1-12. The School is seeking an Upper School History and Economics Teacher who will be responsible for instructing Upper School students in U.S. Government, and Economics, in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum prescribed by the Upper School division. Experience with teaching honors courses, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate, is preferred.
Responsibilities:
●Instruct students in accordance with curriculum requirements and department objectives
●Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments that address multiple learning styles
●Develop organized lesson plans that:
○ emphasize empathy for and understanding of historic cultures and societies, as well as individuals of every socio-political stratum;
○challenge students to think and write critically through the evaluation of evidence, both subjective and objective, in order to formulate clear positions that require analysis, synthesis, contextualization, and historical literacy;
○place an emphasis on thematic history and the interrelationship of events over memorization of facts, challenging students to focus more on the how and why, rather than the names and dates;
○empower students to personalize history while appreciating the achievements and sacrifices of those who came before them.
●Evidence enthusiasm for and continued development of content knowledge in subject matter
●Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and where respectful interactions between and among students are valued
●Participate as an active team member within the History Department, the Upper School faculty, and the School community, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole
The successful candidate will have:
●A Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in history, or comparable discipline, from an accredited college or university (an advanced degree in field is an advantage)
●Preferably three or more years of teaching secondary or post-secondary history, with experience teaching U.S. Government, and Economics
●Fluency in the use of technology in the classroom
Reporting: The Upper School History and Economics Teacher will report directly to the Head of the Upper School.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
