Reminders

  • The annual Halloween Carnival is lurking around the corner- Friday, Oct. 28th 12:30-3:30. The Parents Guild needs your help before, during and after the carnival and it's a spooktacular way to get involved and to meet other parents! Go to www.portergaud.edu/pgpg to volunteer, purchase wristbands and find more information.
  • Got LEGOs? Do you have LEGO bricks you're hoping to clean out of your house? If so, the 5th grade science lab would love to take them off your hands! Email Mrs. Clair (jclair@portergaud.edu) or leave them in the LS office.
  • Collections for food drive will continue through next week. First grade collects soup, second grade collects pasta, third grade collects grits, and fifth grade collects canned fruit.

Matthew Presented a Learning Opportunity


Our third graders began their study of marine debris and South Carolina water this week by collecting and logging marine debris washed into our salt marsh by hurricane Matthew.


In their studies of the water cycle, third graders were challenged to design and build a model for things like condensation and fluffy clouds.

World Food Day


Thank you for the generous donations towards World Food Day. Second graders from Mrs. Sallee's class shared their donations at a class meeting reminding their friends of the great cause. The food will be donated to Our Lady of Mercy Outreach Center on Johns Island.

Fourth Grade Teamwork


In writing class, fourth graders worked on spelling words with suffixes using teamwork.

A Special Castle


Students in Mrs. Greer's reading group are reading Castle in the Attic by Elizabeth Winthrop. To introduce new vocabulary words, a Lego castle was built with specific labels capturing the new words: portcullis, armory, and scullery.

Writer's Workshop


Students in Mrs. Boccabella's Writer's Workshop class worked in small groups discussing and listing the features of different informational texts.

Doubles Matching Game


Mrs. Gerth's math class played the Doubles Matching game. What a fun way to practice doubles facts!

Butterfly Migration


This week, second graders helped release the monarch butterfly they had collected from the butterfly garden as a larva. The students have been busy tracking its growth and changes since early September. It formed a chrysalis on October 3rd and became a beautiful butterfly on October 12th. They gave it a grand send-off to Mexico on Thursday. First through third graders cheered and waved goodbye as it flew away.

Fifth Grade Social Studies


Fifth Graders explored ancient Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent this week in Social Studies. They learned about this region's geography, culture, and written language.

Coding


Dr. Julie Sessions introduced 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to coding using various apps on iPads.
