Introduction to Friendliness
The fourth grade did an amazing job introducing the virtue of friendliness in Chapel this week. We encourage parents to go to http://www.portergaud.edu/
We began our year-long celebration of the virtues on Tuesday with a virtues lunch for Mrs. Gerth's class and Mrs. Roth's class. Throughout the year, each homeroom class will participate in a special virtues lunch. A big thank you goes out to the parents serving on our Virtues Committee who make these lunches possible!
An Important Lesson in Respecting Differences
Terra Burke, Director of Multicultural Affairs, read Abuela by Arthur Dorros to third graders in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month. She focused on the virtues of friendliness and respect, encouraging students to respect differences. Using eggs as a metaphor, Ms. Burke showed students that regardless of what's on the outside, we are all the same deep down inside and it's what's on the inside that really matters.
Caw Caw
Second graders visited Caw Caw Interpretive Center this week as part of their Science and Social Studies curriculum. Students learned about indigo that was introduced by Eliza Pinckney and how it became South Carolina's second most important cash crop. They went on a scavenger hunt through the butterfly garden capturing photos of their findings. Students also used their senses as they hiked on the nature trail followed by a microscope exploration.
Third Grade Rounding
Ms. Goldsmith's Math class had fun this week rounding numbers.
Science Explorations
First graders made use of our outdoor classroom this week to learn about salt marsh creatures!
Second grade scientists learned about Monarch butterflies through our captive rearing stations.
Third graders raced to see whose water drop could evaporate the fastest and then graphed their results!
Instrument Encounters
Third graders enjoyed a special Instrument Encounter this week during community time. Our very own Mr. Monsell introduced them to the saxophone – an instrument he taught himself to play!
Writer's Workshop
44
Second graders enjoyed a special Writer's Workshop outside where they wrote Moment Stories. These compositions included details about their personal lives.
The Elements of a Writer's Craft
Fifth graders just completed their first composition "test" on the craft of ideas. They are now focusing on the craft of organization. To help with organizing their pieces, students completed an activity sorting transitional words and phrases.
Fourth Graders Using the Scientific Method
Ask your fourth grader about how he/she used the scientific method in the hard-boiled egg in a bottle experiment.
Good Morning Cyclones
Our first Good Morning Cyclones team of the year has been hard at work producing fabulous shows for our Lower School. Check this one out from this week!
